The Romans Expository Commentary is built for multiple modes of engagement. You can move through Paul’s argument chapter by chapter in a sustained sequential study, jump directly to a specific verse when preparing a sermon or lesson, search thematically across the entire letter to trace how a doctrine develops, or export a chapter for offline annotation and group use. Each mode is described below so you can work in whatever way best fits your study goals.

Sequential Reading

Open Chapter 1 and work through each verse entry in order from top to bottom. Each entry begins with the Bible text of the verse (or verse group), followed by extended expository commentary that traces the argument, unpacks key terms, draws on Old Testament background, and applies the theological point. Moving through entries in sequence gives you the full shape of Paul’s argument as he builds it — each chapter’s commentary is self-contained but also advances the logic of the chapters before it. Sequential reading is the recommended mode for anyone studying Romans systematically for the first time or preparing a sermon series on the whole letter.

Targeted Verse Study

If you are preaching or studying a specific passage, use the chapter sidebar to navigate directly to the chapter you need. Expand the verse list within that chapter, and click on any verse reference to jump to its commentary entry. The selected verse highlights briefly so you can orient yourself on the page before reading. This mode is ideal for focused exegesis of a single pericope — for example, jumping straight to Romans 3:21–26 to study the doctrine of propitiation, or to Romans 8:28–30 to examine the golden chain of redemption, without needing to scroll through earlier material. Use the search bar at the top of the application to find every occurrence of a theological term across all sixteen chapters of commentary. Searching for a term like “propitiation”, “justification”, “adoption”, “election”, or “union with Christ” returns a list of results drawn from the full commentary text. Each result includes the verse reference and a snippet of the surrounding commentary so you can assess its relevance before navigating to it. Click any result to jump directly to that verse’s commentary entry. Thematic search is particularly useful for tracing how a doctrine develops across the letter — for example, how Paul’s treatment of dikaiosynē (righteousness) in chapter 1 anticipates and grounds what he says in chapters 3, 4, and 10.

Reading Greek Terms

When you encounter a word in italics followed by a transliteration in the commentary text — for example, doulos, dikaiosynē, or hilastērion — this is a Greek term annotation. These annotations are embedded inline in the commentary to illuminate the original word’s meaning and theological weight at the precise point where it matters for interpretation. The transliteration follows standard academic conventions and does not require any knowledge of the Greek alphabet to benefit from. Exporting for Deeper Study

Any chapter can be downloaded as formatted HTML or plain text using the export control on the chapter page. The HTML export preserves the commentary’s typography and verse structure, making it suitable for printing or importing into note-taking and reference tools. Plain text export strips all formatting for maximum compatibility with any application. Common uses include annotating a chapter in a digital notes app alongside your own observations, printing copies for a small group or Sunday school class, or archiving commentary on a passage you are preaching through.
